Intuitive/Mindful Eating

02 Mar 2024 no comments Ahmed Soliman

Mindful eating is a form of meditation that allow us to focus on our emotional and physical eating experience. It is crucial to recognize our eating experience with all of our senses including our sight, taste, hearing, smell and touch, and to witness without any judgement our emotional and physical response before, during and after our experience.

Think about the last meal you had. Can you recall?
Where? Were you in an environment meant for eating?
Why? Why did you eat? Were you hungry, Satisfied or full? Or perhaps, was it offered to you?
When? When do you want to eat? What time was it? How long had it been since the last time you ate?
What? What food or beverage did you eat?
How? How did you eat? Slowly? Rapidly? Were you distracted? Did you eat with other people?
How much? How much food or beverage did you have?

Being able to recall and describe answers to these questions means you were being mindful of your eating habits.

We eat under the influence of our:

Stomach: Are you eating because your body requires energy to remain healthy?
Mouth: Do you want this food because you like the flavour, the texture and the aroma?
Heart: Are you eating because you feel certain emotion or because you simply have nothing else to do?

Techniques to interrupt the inner compulsive eater:

Be aware of your appetite: Ask yourself is it physical hunger (stomach) or psychological hunger (mouth or heart). Are you eating because it is available, or because it is your favourite food?

Listen to your hunger/fullness cues: try to avoid extreme hunger which can lead to overeating, make it a habit to eat at regular time. Develop a healthy relationship with food: take the time to savor and enjoy all the different foods on your plate.

Concentrate on what you eat: allowing your mind to stay tuned with your body signals. Avoid distraction during meals (i.e.. Watching TV) and try to consume meals/snacks in area meant for eating (kitchen/cafeteria).
Eat slowly: decrease the size of your bite, chew food slowly and swallow each bite before taking the next one. Aim to consume a meal in at least 30 minutes.
Manage emotions without eating: Are you eating because you are tired, emotional or as a reward? If you are not truly hungry, distract yourself with an activity you enjoy. Brainstorm strategies to help cope with emotions that do not involve food.

At Lina’s and Dina’s Center, Dietitians will train their clients this type of nutritional counselling to ensure their clients listen to their body cues and practice mindful eating to ease their weight loss journey. For more information, visit our website:

Healthy food pattern during pregnancy

02 Mar 2024 no comments Ahmed Soliman

High food quality, together with adequate macro- and micronutrient intake in pregnancy, is crucial for the health status of the mother and child. Recent findings suggest that it could also be beneficial or harmful in the context of the well-being of the whole future population. According to the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis, most conditions that occur in adulthood originate in fetal life. Moreover, some epigenetic events, modified inter alia by diet, impact more than one generation. Still, the recommendations in most countries are neither popularized nor very detailed. While it seems to be important to direct diet trends towards a healthier lifestyle, the methods of preventing specific disorders like diabetes or asthma are not yet established and require further investigation.

Composition of the maternity diet—quality

Specific recommendations exist for different types of nutrients in pregnancy. They differ in some points according to both the eating tradition and nutrition status of the population. WHO antenatal standards paper provides 39 recommendations related to 5 types of interventions. The healthy eating and physically active style of life is promoted to prevent excessive gestational weight gain (GWG). In the undernourished population, balanced energy and protein intake are recommended to prevent LBW, SGA, and stillbirths. Doses of iron and folate supplementation are given with possible daily or intermittent routine. Supplementation of vitamin A is suggested to be restricted only to areas where vitamin A deficiency is a substantial public health problem. Recommendation of calcium supplementation is limited to population with low-calcium intake. Vitamin B6, zinc, multi-nutrient supplements and vitamin D supplementation are not advocated as routine procedure. Avoiding of caffeine is suggested for women with high consumption. Canadian consensus highlights the need of the uptake of nutrient-dense and energy-appropriate food with moderate increase of energy intake during pregnancy. Concern is given to GWG, adequate folate, iron, choline, omega-3 fatty acid and iodine input, as well as avoiding or limiting specific food which contains bacteria or methyl mercury and alcohol. German National Consensus is quite detailed in different aspects of diet in pregnancy. In the first paragraph, the difference between slightly increase of energy needs in comparison to a much greater increase of vitamin and minerals is highlighted. According to these requirements, nutrient-dense food eating, regular meals and regular exercises together with moderate GWG are recommended. The specific concerns exist for obese pregnant women for whom the standards of care and weight lose still are not well established, vegetarian nutrition with possible supplementation of iron and DHA and vegan where specific medical counselling is required due to diet deficiency of many nutrients .Italian Consensus differs a little in the points according to energy input and protein intake during pregnancy, where specific amounts are recommended in the particular periods. The emphasis is put on the protein and fat composition, iron supplementation, as well as iodine and calcium adequate provision.

Macronutrients

Protein

Both the quantity and the composition of protein are important in the context of diet quality. In a rat model, protein deficiency in pregnancy results in decreased birth weight, decreased heart weight, increased heart rate and increased systolic blood pressure .In general, animal protein is of higher quality than vegetable protein, suggesting that meat should be the main source of protein in pregnancy, but mixing different types of vegetables increases the quality of plant protein substantially.

Nevertheless, it should also be considered that specific types of plant diets, such as vegetarian and vegan diets, are associated with microelement and mineral deficiencies and unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. In this context, a vegetarian diet can result in vitamin B12 and iron deficiency, as well as low birth weight, whereas a vegan diet can lead to inadequate intake of DHA, zinc and iron, as well as an increased risk of preeclampsia and inadequate brain development. However, still a well-balanced ovo-lactose vegetarian diet usually enables good nutrient status in pregnancy, when supplemented with vitamin D, folic acid, iodine, iron, vitamin B12 and zinc, and, in cases of a fish-free diet, with DHA.

In contrast, consumption of red meat, which was recently revealed to be associated with cancer risk, raises some concerns over pregnancy and protein requirements, but till now, there are no any evidence that this diet can negatively impact child’s health.

Fat

Fat in the diet of pregnant woman is important mainly in context of fatty acid composition, mainly that of DHA and eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA). Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for brain development and proper functioning of the retina. In many studies, maternal serum DHA concentration has been associated with neuronal development and plasticity, receptor-mediated signaling, membrane fluidity and the formation of second messengers. This type of fatty acid also impacts modulation of inflammation by affecting Toll-like receptors (TLRs), related to adequate response to bacteria and other microorganisms. DHA also plays a role as a precursor of the anti-inflammatory lipid mediator RvD, which prevents the formation of proinflammatory arachidonic acid products, thus indicating the anti-inflammatory function of these molecules.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are an essential component of a healthy diet. However, increased caloric intake associated with increased fat and carbohydrate consumption with adequate protein has been associated with neonatal adiposity, which is obviously unfavorable .Additionally, a preconception diet rich in saturated fat, carbohydrates and take-away food has been associated with poor asthma control during pregnancy, thus affecting child well-being .Moreover, changing the maternal eating pattern by decreasing carbohydrate load and increasing physical activity could impact the inflammation status associated with obesity in pregnant women .Similarly, modifying the protein/carbohydrate ratio can decrease the expected GWG.

Gestational weight gain

According to US epidemiological data, 69% of the population is overweight and 35% is obese. This change in prevalence is related to changes in lifestyle, but some prenatal events are also important. Gestational weight gain GWG has been shown to be a predictor of pregnancy complications and future health problems in the child .GWG is strongly associated with birth weight and values exceeding 4000 g are associated with a 2-fold greater risk of obesity later in life. Excess intake of calories during pregnancy has been associated with miscarriage, diabetes and preeclampsia in mothers and obesity and type 2 diabetes in children. This diabetic effect seems to be transgenerational. The mechanism is possibly related to placental gene-expression changes

Surprisingly, opposite effect was described by Barker and colleagues who observed that nutritional insufficiency in the fetal period reflected by LBW or SGA is also related to glucose intolerance, diabetes, hypertension and coronary disease later in life .These observations are the basis of the so-called thirsty phenotype hypothesis, which reflects the changes in the metabolism as it increases efficiency.

In Lina’s and Dina’s we do our best to assure the pregnant lady is getting the right diet plan with the right organized amount of meals , so the process of weight gain will be manageable during the 9 months , at the same time providing all fresh nutrients needed for her and the baby. Impact Of Fish on heart Disease

02 Mar 2024 no comments Ahmed Soliman

Eating fish may help lower your risk of coronary artery disease. As part of a heart-healthy diet, eat at least two servings of fish each week. Oily fish, which contain omega-3 fatty acids, are best for your heart. These fish include salmon, mackerel, lake trout, herring, and sardines.

Fish as part of a heart-healthy diet

Fish is an important part of a heart-healthy diet. A heart-healthy diet is not just for people who have existing health problems. It is good for all healthy adults and children older than age 2. Learning heart-healthy eating habits now can help prevent problems in years to come. Eating a heart-healthy diet can help you to:

  • Lower your blood pressure.
  • Lower your cholesterol.
  • Help lower your risk of coronary artery disease.
  • Reach and stay at a healthy weight.
  • Prevent or control diabetes.
  • Improve your overall health.

Stroke

Eating more than two servings of fish a week may lower your risk for stroke or TIA. Oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and herring) may lower your risk more than other types of fish.

Fish safety

According to Health Canada, most people should not eat more than 150 g (5.3 oz) per week of fish that are known to have higher mercury levels. These include fresh or frozen tuna (not canned “light” tuna), shark, swordfish, marlin, orange roughly, and escolar. But women who are or may become pregnant or who are nursing mothers need to restrict high-mercury fish to no more than 150 g (5.3 oz) a month.

Health Canada says most people don’t need to limit how much canned (white) albacore tuna they eat each week. But women who are or may become pregnant or who are nursing mothers need to limit canned albacore tuna intake to no more than 300 g (10.6 oz) each week.

Health Canada has no restrictions on eating fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury. These include salmon, rainbow trout, pollock, herring, shrimp, mussels, clams, oysters, and canned “light” tuna

Fish oil supplements

Sometimes people who don’t eat fish take fish oil supplements. Some doctors think fish oil might help the heart because it has the omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish. But other doctors don’t recommend these supplements to help the heart. That’s because research has not proved that fish oil is helpful for everyone.

Heart failure or have had a heart attack, fish oil supplements may have some benefit for you.

Other heart problems, supplements have not been shown to help your heart.

Other foods that have omega-3 fatty acids

If you don’t eat fish, you can get omega-3 fats from foods such as omega-3 eggs, walnuts, flax seeds, and canola oil.

Most of these foods have a different kind of omega-3 fatty acid (called ALA) than the kinds of omega-3 fatty acids you get from eating oily fish (called DHA and EPA). There is not enough good research about whether foods with ALA help the heart.

Eating Disorder

02 Mar 2024 no comments Ahmed Soliman

Eating disorders are a group of conditions marked by an unhealthy relationship with food.

It tends to develop during the teenage and young adult years, and they are much more common in girls and women. No one knows the precise cause of eating disorders, but they seem to coexist with psychological and medical issues such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, trouble coping with emotions, and substance abuse.

At Lina’s and Dina’s center we work hard to help people with eating disorders. Since they have bad relationships with food, we try to fix this relationship by making them following healthy diet

Main types of eating disorder

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa.
This is characterized by weight loss often due to excessive dieting and exercise, sometimes to the point of starvation. People with anorexia feel they can never be thin enough and continue to see themselves as “fat” despite extreme weight loss.

Bulimia nervosa.
The condition is marked by cycles of extreme overeating, known as bingeing, followed by purging or other behaviours to compensate for the overeating. It is also associated with feelings of loss of control about eating.

Signs of Anorexia Nervosa
People with anorexia nervosa have an extreme fear of gaining weight. They often diet and exercise relentlessly, sometimes to the point of starvation. About one-third to one-half of anorexics also binge and purge by vomiting or misusing laxatives. People with anorexia have a distorted body image, thinking they are overweight when in fact they are underweight. They may count calories obsessively and only allow themselves tiny portions of certain specific foods. When confronted, someone with anorexia will often deny that there’s a problem.

Signs of Bulimia
People with bulimia nervosa have episodes of eating large amounts of food (called bingeing) followed by purging (vomiting or using laxatives), fasting, or exercising excessively to compensate for the overeating.
Unlike anorexia, people with bulimia are often a normal weight. But they have the same intense fear of gaining weight and distorted body image. They see themselves as “fat” and desperately want to lose weight. Because they often feel ashamed and disgusted with themselves, people with bulimia become very good at hiding the bulimic behaviours.

Lina’s and Dina’s center provides people with bulimia and anorexia with a balanced diet that helps them to see themselves as they like to be because dietitians at Lina’s and Dina’s center think that the main key of prevention of eating disorders is fallowing a healthy diet.

Are you ready for a healthier you?

02 Mar 2024 no comments Ahmed Soliman

New Year’s resolutions can vary from trying something new, to swapping your old habits for better ones, to changing your lifestyle completely!

They can often start off well, but end up a bit abandoned. Thinking about some realistic, long term lifestyle changes may be a good option. Why not look at some of the suggestions below and pick some that you could fit into your lifestyle!

Be snack savvy : there’s no reason why snacks can’t be incorporated into a healthy diet! But it’s important to avoid having too many snacks that are low in essential nutrients and high in fat, salt and sugar. Try swapping fried crisps, chocolate and sweets for fruit, vegetable sticks, low fat yogurts, unsalted nuts, wholegrain crisp breads, oatcakes or rice cakes with low fat dips or humus to keep you going between meals

Eat more plants : incorporate some plant-based protein into your day (e.g. beans, peas, lentils, tofu, nuts or seeds).

Get some fiber : Could you swap your usual breakfast for higher fiber versions? Or try a new wholegrain food? There are plenty to choose from like whole meal pitta, wraps or bagels, brown rice, oats, barley, quinoa, buckwheat, wholegrain spelt pasta, bulgur wheat or plain popcorn! Having more fiber in our diets can help to keep our digestive systems healthy and benefit our long term health. We should be aiming for 30g a day!

If you are looking to lose some weight Try and bulk out your meals with vegetables and increase the fiber content by adding whole grains, beans or pulses.

Just add water :good hydration is essential to keep your body and mind working their best. Water is a great choice, but other fluids like tea, coffee, unsweetened fruit juices and soft drinks also count. Sugar sweetened beverages should be minimized and fruit juices and smoothies should be limited to a total of 150 ml per day. It’s best to avoid having too many sugary or alcoholic drinks.

Move more and try something new :Why not get moving and make activity social by going for a walk with friends or family. Or you could start a new hobby!

Step it up :Did you know that 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on at least 5 days a week helps to prevent and manage over 20 health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, obesity, and mental health problems. We all know we should be more active, but if you feel unfit and the thought of jogging around the park is not for you, try building up your activity levels slowly with moderate exercise like brisk walking or cycling. As you start to feel fitter, increase the amount and level of the activity you do and try to build up to 30 minutes on most days of the week.

All these suggestions are covered when you join us at Lina’s & Dina’s Diet center. We will help you to achieve your goal for a healthy and balanced lifestyle with the programs that we offer. Lina’s & Dina’s Diet Center is specialized to deal with different health cases & goals in order to encourage and keep you forward to reach the right track.

The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

...and heres a line of some really, really, really, really long text, just to see how it is handled and to find out how it overflows;

Welcome to image alignment! If you recognize this post, it is because these are blocks that have been converted from the classic Markup: Image Alignment post. The best way to demonstrate the ebb and flow of the various image positioning options is to nestle them snuggly among an ocean of words. Grab a paddle and let’s get started. Be sure to try it in RTL mode. Left should stay left and right should stay right for both reading directions.

On the topic of alignment, it should be noted that users can choose from the options of None, Left, Right, and Center. If the theme has added support for align wide, images can also be wide and full width. Be sure to test this page in RTL mode.

In addition, they also get the options of the image dimensions 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% or a set width and height.

Image Alignment 580x300

The image above happens to be centered.

Image Alignment 150x150

The rest of this paragraph is filler for the sake of seeing the text wrap around the 150×150 image, which is left aligned.

As you can see the should be some space above, below, and to the right of the image. The text should not be creeping on the image. Creeping is just not right. Images need breathing room too. Let them speak like you words. Let them do their jobs without any hassle from the text. In about one more sentence here, we’ll see that the text moves from the right of the image down below the image in seamless transition. Again, letting the do it’s thang. Mission accomplished!

And now for a massively large image. It also has no alignment.

Image Alignment 1200x400

The image above, though 1200px wide, should not overflow the content area. It should remain contained with no visible disruption to the flow of content.

Image Alignment 300x200

And now we’re going to shift things to the right align. Again, there should be plenty of room above, below, and to the left of the image. Just look at him there… Hey guy! Way to rock that right side. I don’t care what the left aligned image says, you look great. Don’t let anyone else tell you differently.

In just a bit here, you should see the text start to wrap below the right aligned image and settle in nicely. There should still be plenty of room and everything should be sitting pretty. Yeah… Just like that. It never felt so good to be right.

And just when you thought we were done, we’re going to do them all over again with captions!

Image Alignment 580x300
Look at 580×300 getting some caption love.

The image above happens to be centered. The caption also has a link in it, just to see if it does anything funky.

Image Alignment 150x150
Itty-bitty caption.

And now for a massively large image. It also has no alignment.

Image Alignment 1200x400
Massive image comment for your eyeballs.

The image above, though 1200px wide, should not overflow the content area. It should remain contained with no visible disruption to the flow of content.

Image Alignment 300x200
Feels good to be right all the time.

Imagine that we would find a use for the extra wide image! This image has the wide width alignment:

Image Alignment 1200x4002

Can we go bigger? This image has the full width alignment:

Image Alignment 1200x4002

And that’s a wrap, yo! You survived the tumultuous waters of alignment. Image alignment achievement unlocked! One last thing: The last item in this post’s content is a thumbnail floated right. Make sure any elements after the content are clearing properly.

Block: Button

Button blocks are not semantically buttons, but links inside a styled div.

If you do not add a link, a link tag without an anchor will be used.

Check to make sure that the text wraps correctly when the button has more than one line of text, and when it is extra long.

Buttons have three styles:

If the theme has a custom color palette, test that background color and text color settings work correctly.

Now lets test how buttons display together with large texts.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Donec mollis. Quisque convallis libero in sapien pharetra tincidunt. Aliquam elit ante, malesuada id, tempor eu, gravida id, odio.

Aenean bibendum. Curabitur mattis quam id urna.

Vivamus dui. Donec nonummy lacinia lorem. Cras risus arcu, sodales ac, ultrices ac, mollis quis, justo. Sed a libero. Quisque risus erat, posuere at, tristique non, lacinia quis, eros.

Block: Cover

This is a left aligned cover block with a background image.

The cover block lets you add text on top of images or videos.

This blocktype has several alignment options, and you can also align or center the text inside the block.

The background image can be fixed and you can change its opacity and add an overlay color.

Make sure that the text wraps correctly over the image, and that text markup and alignments are working.

The next image should have a pink overlay color, the text should be bold and aligned to the left:

A center aligned cover image block, with a left aligned text.

This is a full width cover block with a fixed background image with a 20% opacity.

Make sure that all the text is readable.

Our last cover image block has a wide width.

This is a wide cover block with a video background.

Compare the video and image blocks.
This block is centered.

The block below has no alignment, and the text is a link. Overlay colors must also work with video backgrounds.
